The creation of Le Pavillon within the framework of the Palais de Tokyo,
directed by Nicolas Bourriaud and J?r?me Sans, responds to a desire to
confront young artists with the realities of contemporary creation. In
continuous interaction with the activity of the Palais de Tokyo, this
study
program offers training which is directly linked to the practical and
intellectual life of the site : moments shared with the invited artists,
participation in the construction of projects, analysis of the modes of
production and distribution of works.
Le Pavillon is primarily addressed to artists who have made a first step
in
their experience; but each group will also include one or two art
critics or
exhibition curators, so as to create the conditions for an ongoing
debate.
Le Pavillon is conceived as a research laboratory, open to artistic
practices in perpetual evolution. More than a utopia, this permanent
questioning corresponds to a demand for vigilance.
In order to create an active space, destined to continually regenerate
itself, Le Pavillon has no permanent teachers. The idea of Le Pavillon
is to
create a synergy by inviting French and foreign artists with different
and
complementary ideas, who will act as an accompanying committee for the
projects of the Pavillon artists. Each artist-teacher helps the artists
at
Le Pavillon in the realization of their projects and from time to time
invites other artists to hold workshops and carry out studio visits. The
artists invited to exhibit at the Palais de Tokyo are also invited to
intervene at Le Pavillon and to work with its participants.
The intellectual debate and artistic reflection should be concretized by
the
production of works, whether collective or individual, presented at the
Palais de Tokyo. This finalization of works, which may take very
different
forms, will constitute a database, the fruit of a year of exchanges.
THE PROGRAM
Ange Leccia is responsible for directing the program of Le Pavillon.
The artists-teachers responsible for the year 2001-2002 are Dominique
Gonzalez-Foerster, Gabriel Orozco, and Michael Amzalag & Mathias
Augustyniak
- M/M.
Technical assistance for projects in the areas of video, sound and
Internet
is provided by Katya Bonnenfant.
PARTNERS OF LE PAVILLON
Le Pavillon receives an operating grant from the D?l?gation aux arts
plastiques and from the D?l?gation au d?veloppement de l'action
territoriale, Minist?re de la Culture et de la Communication.
Various partners will support specific projects or grants : American
Center
Foundation / Association fran?aise d'action artistique (AFAA), Minist?re
des
affaires ?trang?res / Caisse des d?p?ts et consignations / Ecole
nationale
sup?rieure d'arts de Cergy. A partnership has been established for
2001/2002
with The Core Program - The Glassel School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts,
Houston.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION ABOUT LE PAVILLON
Dates:
- June 8, 2001 : deadline for reception of portfolios
- June 12 to 15, 2001 : pre-selection of candidates by portfolio
- June 21 and 22, 2001 : individual selection interviews with
approximately twenty pre-selected candidates
- June 25 to 29, 2001 : announcement of results by mail. 7 candidates
will
be admitted, 3 will be placed on a waiting list.
- November 2001 to June 2002 : year at Le Pavillon
Profile of participants : young French and foreign artists having
already
acquired a certain competence through other programs or experiences, and
seeking to reinforce their approach to contemporary creation. One or two
young exhibition curators and/or art critics will be admitted every
year.
Age: 25 and over
Grants: each of the 7 selected participants receives a production grant
and
a study grant. The production grant allows the participant to carry out
individual and group projects, the study grant is a contribution to the
cost
of the participant's stay in Paris.
Registration : thanks to a special partnership with the Ecole nationale
sup?rieure d'arts de Paris-Cergy, registration at the Pavilion allows
the
artists to benefit from a student health plan. Registration fees for
this
plan and for the registration at the Ecole de Cergy amount to 3,000
francs.
Housing: Le Pavillon has no housing facilities but helps facilitate the
housing search for the artists.
The registration form must be returned to Le Pavillon no later than
Friday
June 8, 2001. It must include the following documents :
- An artist's portfolio: 20 visuals (slides or photographs, format A4
maximum) and/or 1 video (DV or VHS, 10 minutes maximum) and/or 1 CD-ROM.
- A letter of candidacy including a short description of your current
projects, your territories of research, your working methods and your
expectations concerning Le Pavillon.
- A complete resume with photograph.
- A photocopy of your national identity card or passport.
Knowledge of both French and English is desirable.
Each document must include the family and first names of the artist.
Any person wishing to rule retrieve his dossier after the selection
process
is requested to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope in the format
of
the dossier.

In 15 years of existence, le MAGASIN - Centre National d'Art
Contemporain de Grenoble has established itself
as one of the main places for the diffusion of contemporary art in
France.
Located in an industrial building constructed in 1900 by Gustave
Eiffel's atelier, it offers close to 2000m2 of
exhibition space divided into 2 autonomous parts : the "Rue" (a 1,000
square-metre space with a ceiling height of
21 metres in the centre of the art centre), and the Galleries (a 900
square-metre space), allowing for a flexible
and experimental programme of events.
Putting on some twelve temporary exhibitions a year, renewed every three
months, le MAGASIN has also been
developing extra muros projects since 1996.
In parallel to this programme the following events are held: weekly
conferences (during the school period),
symposiums, discussions, training programmes, trips within France and
abroad...
Le MAGASIN also has a specialist bookshop of contemporary art and
architecture. Publications (mainly by le
MAGASIN) are available at the bookshop or by mail.
Founded in 1987, the Curatorial Training Programme (l'Ecole du MAGASIN)
offers professional exhibition-related
training courses, which prepare students for the different jobs related
to contemporary art. Over a 10 month
period, the students take part in the institution's activities and
organize an exhibition based on their own project.
They can sign up for study trips and attend seminars that are open to
artists, critics and historians. The
programme includes introductory courses of arts management as well as
theory classes.
APPLICATIONS TO 11th SESSION:
Aims
Founded in 1987, the Ecole du Magasin was the first school of its
kind in
Europe. Acknowledging the absence of any specialised training for the
various
activities related to exhibiting contemporary art, its primary
objective was thus
to give students practical experience and mastery of the
conceptual,
methodological and technical tools pertaining to the organisation and
reception
of exhibitions. Keeping constant track of the developments in artistic
practices
and discourses, the pedagogy has being enriched by expanding art to
social
and cultural realities. While it continues to train professional
exhibition
curators, the current emphasis is on encouraging the emergence of
dynamic
individuals capable of questioning and exploring the exhibition as
medium.
Particularities
One of the specificities of the Ecole du
Magasin is to be based in a
contemporary art centre which produces its
own exhibitions and events.
Therefore it contributes to the efforts of
the institution to provide an active
environment for contemporary artistic
production. It has developed
partnerships and exchange schemes with
numerous institutions abroad,
including many European schools offering
equivalent training (Royal College of
Art and Goldsmiths College in London; Jan van
Eyck Akademie, Maastricht;
Programme of superior and postgraduate
studies of the Ecole Sup?rieure
d'Arts Visuels, ESAV, Geneva).
The Ecole du Magasin offers theoretical
training in an environment that
provides daily opportunities for its
immediate validation and application.
Throughout their training, and with the
support of project tutors, students work
independently on individual or group
projects, taking responsibility for all
aspects of their production (selection of
artists and works, budgeting,
transport, insurance, loan procedures,
catalogue preparation).
The aim of the formation is to give students
a professional experience.
Throughout the course, students thus deal
with issues specific to the art world
and experience its professional realities.
Teaching Staff
The Ecole du Magasin is placed under the responsibility of the
Director of
Magasin and a team of teachers, who supervise the programme and
define
pedagogical orientations and working procedures. The team of
teachers
consists of: Lionel Bovier, art historian, publisher, independent
curator and
exterior collaborator of Magasin; Catherine Qu?loz, art historian,
curator of the
exhibitions of Sous-Sol (curatorial studies seminar),
coordinator of the
Graduate and Postgraduate Studies Program of the ESAV, Geneva;
Liliane
Schneiter, art historian, researcher on the Walter Benjamin corpus in
relation
to cybertechniques, coordinator of the Graduate and Postgraduate
Studies
Program of the ESAV, Geneva; Alice Vergara-Bastiand, head of the
cultural
Department and training at Magasin, coordinator of the Ecole du
Magasin.
The collaborators of Magasin cooperate with the team of teachers
according to
their respective field of practice and research within the
institution.
Theoreticians and practitioners involved with specific issues
pertaining to
exhibitions and their reception regularly take part in the programme:
Fareed
Armaly, artist and director of the Stuttgart K?nstlerhaus; Christophe
Cherix, art
historian specialized in the American art of the 60's, scientific
collaborator of
the Print Room of the Mus?e d'art et d'histoire of Geneva;
Dominique
Gonzalez-Foerster, artist and exhibitions organizer; Nathalie Magnan,
media
theoretician professor at the Ecole Nationale Sup?rieure des
Beaux-Arts of
Dijon; John Miller, artist, art critic and visiting professor at Yale
University; etc.
Special contributors are invited in accordance with the requirements of
projects
developed by the students.
Artists and professionals working at Magasin, and professionals met
during
study trips, extend the programme according to the
years.
Programme
The 10-month course is structured into four
successive phases to make
students conversant with the tools needed to
organise and realise their
collective project, and, as it proceeds,
places increasing emphasis on
independent studies.
From September to November, the main emphasis
is on the theoretical and
technical tools of exhibition-making,
articulated around seminars on the history
of exhibitions, art history after the 1960's,
the design and architecture of
exhibitions, media theories, and independent
or collective curatorship.
From December to February, independent study
comes to the fore. This period
is devoted to research and meetings designed
to lead to the conception of a
project to be prepared between March and June
and presented in June-July.
The students have five main tasks:
-to organize collectively an exhibition
-to edit the accompanying publication
-to realize and communicate their project
-to develop activities in various sectors of
Magasin (exhibitions, publications,
MAG, website, communication, etc.).
-to find another work experience (internship)
Conditions
The programme lasts 10 months
and can be extended by 6 months for work experience
(internship).
The course begins on 20 September.
Teaching is free. Accomodation in Grenoble
is to be paid by the student.
Spoken French and English are essential.
Conditions of Admission
The course is intended for art and art history students
holding a baccalaureate
since four years (or equivalent school leaving
qualifications) and with a
University degree, or to persons with significant
professional experience in
contemporary art and the capacity
to follow an advanced course.
Candidates are shortlisted on the strength of their
written applications. These
must include a letter of motivation, a detailed CV
(education, training and
work experience, professional experience and languages),
three
letters of reference and a proposal for an exhibition at
an art centre, a
personal research project or two written texts of
around 5,000
characters each.
Applications should be sent >from 1st May to 15 June at
the latest, together
with a cheque made out to Magasin for 400 F (61
euros) to cover
administrative costs.
The shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by a
jury of
professionals on 4 July.
A maximum of 10 applicants will be admitted.
